CALENDAR CORRELATION

alt="Mayan Aztec Long Count Calendar glyphs with numerals by Michael Giza"

There is no easy formula to correlate a date in the Mesoamerican calendar with a date in the Gregorian calendar, due to the irregular Gregorian method of adding leap years. However, many talented anthropologists and archaeologists have matched the two, using known dates from the initial interaction between the Spanish and the Aztecs, recorded by both in their own calendars.

Several correlations exist, each with its own proponents and reasons it is considered the "correct" correlation. Jaguar Nights uses the GMT (Goodman-Martinez-Thompson), named for the three scholars who developed it. This sets the Julian date constant of 584283 as the start date of the Mayan Long Count calendar on 11 August 3114 BC. A precise scientific and astronomical calendar, the Julian date records the days since 1 January 4713 BC at GMT noon. Modern Guatemalan Maya, who have kept the Tzolkin unbroken since before the Conquest, use the GMT correlation. This placed the first day of Baktun 13 (the so-called end date of the Mayan calendar) on 21 December 2012, with a Tzolkin date of 4-Ahau.

Ancient Mesoamericans did not use leap years; they did not care if the nominal solar calendar, the Haab, matched the solar year exactly. They never skipped or added days. Each calendar day was like a living entity, and would never be disrespected that way.
