SACRED CALENDAR (TZOLKIN)

haab calendar stone photo

The 260-day sacred calendar—Tzolkin to the Maya, Tonalpohualli to the Aztecs—consists of two interlocking cycles. Twenty day-signs follow each other, in order, like our days of the week—Monday is always followed by Tuesday.

Appended to each day-sign is a number (1–13), so 1-Imix/Cipactli is always followed by 2-Ik/Ehecatl. The numbers modify the day-signs, yield- ing 260 slightly different combinations. Each of the twenty day-signs has its own personality and set of concepts, and is adjusted by the thirteen numbers, and by the special types of days. The most important of the thirteen are the beginning and the end points (1 and 13) and the balance points (7 and 8).

The sacred calendar was consulted for divination, planning, and naming infants. This Tzolkin energy is still used for planning, divination, and horoscopes. The ancient Mesoamericans saw time as cyclical or as spiral. By observing what happened on a given day-sign and number combination, they could extrapolate to a future occurrence of that combination. You can do the same. By paying attention to these energies and noting what happens to you and how you feel during the various combinations, you can begin to live your life in harmony with these two cycles. (Consult Jaguar Nights: A Journey through the Tzolkin for complete information on daykeeping, and pick up a copy of our blank Jaguar Nights Journal to record your own journey.)
