TLALOC

tlaloc drawing by Michael Giza

Tlaloc "He Who Makes Things Grow" is one of the oldest gods of Mesoamerica. The Lord of Water, he is god of rain and earthly fertility. The Maya had a similar god of storms called Chaac. As storm god, Tlaloc sent thunder, lightning and hail, but also life giving rain.

Tlaloc was lord of the third sun (we're currently in the fifth sun) Nahui-Quiahuitl, which ended in a rain or flood of fire. He is a Lord of the Night, ruling every ninth evening, and also a Lord of the Day, ruling all Tzolkin days numbered eight.

With his consort Chalchiuhtlicue, Tlaloc presides over one of the thirteen levels of the Aztec heaven, called Tlalocan, a springtime paradise where those who were killed by lightning or down- ing spent eternity. He and his consort created the Tlaloques, a group of small thunder beings, four of whom hold up the corners of the universe.

The Chac Mool is a type of sacrificial stone depicting the god Chac half-reclining on his back, holding a bowl or plate, with his head turned to the side. Offerings to the rain god, such as pulque, tobacco, and incense, were placed until the stone. In the Aztec world, the receptacle is known as a cuauhxicalli and receives human hearts.
