FIRST QUARTER (WAXING) MOON

full moon graphic by Michael Giza

During the waxing moon, the lighted slice of the moon grows from the total shadow of the dark (or new) moon toward the complete illumination of the full moon. It begins about three days after the new moon. The calendar symbol marks the center point between dark and full in the moon’s cycle. Although the moon is always half in shadow and half lit by the sun, from our position on earth we see it differently according to what angle the three bodies make. The first quarter is when the moon is at a ninety degree angle, showing the division between light and dark. The lit portion of the moon grows from waxing crescent (less than half) to first quarter (one quarter of the way through the moon’s full cycle) to a waxing gibbous moon (more than half appears to be illuminated). The opposite side of the moon is lit from the waning moon.

Because it is getting larger, the waxing moon’s affinity is for increasing (wealth, health) and to be constructive, adding in positive influences such as success, courage, friendship, and love. It helps to draw what you need, and offers a new beginning. It’s a good time to add things (strength, by working out, for instance); to gather information, friends or resources; or to make plans.

You can organize your house and increase your feng-shui during this time.

The waxing moon is visible in the afternoon and early evening.
