LAST QUARTER (WANING) MOON

full moon drawing by Michael Giza

The waning moon's power influences the days when the lighted sliver of the moon grows smaller, beginning three days after the full moon and continuing to just before the dark (new) moon. The calendar symbol marks the center point between full and dark in the moon's cycle.

The lit portion of the moon shrinks from wan- ing gibbous (more than half lit) to half (last quarter moon) to a waning crescent (less than half lit). Although the moon is always half in shadow and half illuminated, we see it at the different angles. The last quarter moon (three quarters of the way through a full cycle) is when the division between light and dark on the moon is at a ninety-degree angle to the earth. The opposite side of the moon is lit from the waxing moon.

Because it is getting smaller, this moon cycle's magical affinities are with banishing, reducing, and lessening (of things like bad habits, debt, and depression), destruction of unwanted influences (addiction, illness, negative energy, and hoarding), soothing of irritation and inflammation, and removal of obstacles.

During this time, slow down and look at what is overpowering you. Don't try to acquire anything, or increase anything. Allow the shrinking moon to carry away what needs to leave.

It is a good time to clean your house, to throw things away, and reduce clutter. The waning moon is visible at night and in the early morning.
